Speaker Series: DJ Stout – Variations on a Rectangle

April 13 | Denver Art Museum | 6PM

Last year the University of Texas Press published DJ Stout’s design retrospective, Variations on a Rectangle, and the following year a reality TV star became president. What’s up with that? Stout may not have any insight into that bizarre occurrence but he does have over 35 years of experience–particularly in editorial and book design.

Pentagram partner, DJ Stout, takes us through his top five (technically six) cover picks for the year, and why he thinks they work so well. As a publication designer for the past 30 years, Stout knows a thing or two about what makes a successful magazine cover. In the ‘90s he was the celebrated art director of Texas Monthly, where he captured the hearts and souls of Texans, and the admiration of designers and art directors everywhere. He loves the challenge of communicating big ideas in the simplest possible way. Last year, his monograph, Variations on a Rectangle, was published. It covers his 30+ year career, and features more than 250 projects.

DJ’s work has been widely published and has won countless design awards. In 2004 I.D. (International Design) magazine profiled DJ as one of its “Fifty American Designers” He is frequently asked to speak at design conferences and events and to judge competitions all over the world.

Stout, who was the award-winning art director of Texas Monthly magazine for 13 years and a Pentagram Partner since 2000 will show examples from his new book and relay how he learned to think inside the box.
