Art Directors Club of Denver and AIGA Colorado teamed up last Saturday, April 28th at local design agency, The Integer Group, to help Colorado and surrounding area college art students make it in the professional world by hosting the annual event, The Review. At The Review students get invaluable feedback on their portfolio as it is reviewed by up to five creative professionals and compete for scholarships and prizes.

Students presented their work to local agency designers, business owners and artists from many art disciplines such as digital design, web design, print design and photography, in one-on-one sessions, similar to an interview. The professionals gave feedback on the students work, how they can improve and advice on how to present their work to land their dream job.

A.J. Croce, ADCD Vice President and Elysia Syriac, AIGA President, reviewed the top portfolios and handed out a $500 scholarship and Adobe CS5.5 Creative Suite to the winner of each review session.

And the winners are…

Meet Shanna McNear and Ally Feldman, co-chair’s for this year’s Paper Fashion Show. Best way to sum them up? A quote by Maya Angelou, “I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass.”

Here is a little about the two of them.

Shanna was born in the booming metropolis of Sterling, CO. Due to the fact that her high school literally only had ceramics and photography (which she signed up for and dropped later to take P.E. for the hell of it), she had no idea what she wanted to do with her life. She finally decided to move to Fort Collins and attend Colorado State University, to major in Journalism with a minor in Web Design. Dead wrong on both counts. She disliked writing AND coding. But it did lead her to meet some people that put her in the right direction and 4 years later she graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design.

After graduation, she moved to Denver on a whim and a prayer that she would get a few freelance gigs. Luckily that prayer turned into a reality. For the next year, she bust her ass freelancing at multiple agencies, taking on random projects and volunteering for the Art Directors Club of Denver. She also had about 15-20 interviews, which all ended up telling her, “sorry, but no cigar.” As discouraging as it was for her, she wouldn’t change it for the world, because she wouldn’t be at the job she loves now.

Shanna is currently an Associate Art Director at The Integer Group, working on Regions for MillerCoors. She loves small dogs, Roseanne (circa 90s), window shopping and anything mustache related. She dislikes her inability to not blush when embarrassed, gluten and when people pop their knuckles. See Shanna’s work at: www.goodforyoushanna.com.

Ally was born and raised right here in Denver, CO. Always artistic as a kid, she headed off to try Southern California and costume design on for size in college. Lacking the patience to sew for hours, she landed on graphic design and printmaking and was hooked immediately. Turns out there’s not enough snow in SoCal for a native Coloradoan, so after graduating she headed back to our fair city and has been working in the local advertising and design world since.

Ally is currently an Art Director at The Integer Group where she cures the world of mediocre medical marketing on a daily basis, and spends her free time running, reading design blogs, and noodling around on her letterpress.

If you would like to get involved with running ADCD and meet lots of fun creatives, email us at info@adcd.com to attend a board meeting. ADCD is ran by an all-volunteer board consisting of 15+ members. Board members and volunteers to the board help organize and plan all our events.

The Art Directors Club Denver has once again proved sheets of paper never looked so good at the largest Paper Fashion Show in the nation. Over 50 design teams created fashions for the sold out event to benefit Downtown Aurora Visual Arts (DAVA), a local community organization that provides after-school arts programs for urban youth ages 3-17. Kids participate in projects that help build self-esteem and increase connection to the community.

Each year DAVA, as part of their curriculum, enters three teams into the Paper Fashion Show. “We have been so grateful over the years for ADCD’s involvement with our youth. Paper Fashion is the highlight of the year for kids who only imagine careers in design. They love being part of all the hubbub and naturally seeing their own designs come to life,” Says Susan Jenson, Executive Director of DAVA. “Kids are so changeable as teens and fashion is a huge inspiration—that and the fantasy component associated with no limits to the imagination. Because of ADCD, we are coming up from behind to continue offering free onsite programs for kids who just do not have access to arts programming.”

ADCD has donated $5,000 to DAVA this year bringing the total up to more than $27,000 donated to DAVA since the show began in 2004. “It’s ADCD’s mission to strengthen our community. We are humbled by the support of the community for this show and our club. DAVA is an amazing organization and we are grateful to be a part of something that truly impacts Denver’s youth,” says Tanner Bennett, ADCD’s President. “We also want to thank all our sponsors, including xpedx for donating the paper for the show, our volunteer Paper Fashion Show team headed up by Shanna McNear, Ally Feldman and Katie Matteo, and our members who have continually sought out ways to better our community.”

To find out more information on ADCD or to become a member visit www.adcd.com.

To donate to DAVA please visit www.davarts.org/donate.

The Art Directors Club of Denver, founded in 1955, is a local non-profit, multi-disciplinary creative organization focused on strengthening the creative community through education, workshops, informative events and an annual design competition. ADCD’s goal is to foster collaboration and inspiration among existing creatives, elevate local talent and resources, and empower the next generation of creative professionals.
